The position entails the performance of pre-professional on-the-job training duties in either Psychology (or related social science)/Human Factors or in Industrial Engineering within the Human Factors Division. The incumbent is assigned tasks related to data collection, data management and analysis, technology evaluation, literature reviews, project tracking, and written and oral communication in support of ongoing research activities.

Duties include:

1. Application of knowledge and techniques in psychology, human factors, and/or Industrial Engineering fields to support transportation related human factors projects.
2. Assistance in conducting lab experiments and/or field studies.
3. Dataset development and maintenance, data analysis
4. Assistance in researching, writing and editing government reports, research papers and related documents, and scientific presentations.
5. Participation in meetings with project lead, supervisor and other team members.
6. Project management support so as to successfully complete project milestones on time and budget.

The ideal student would need to have a technical understanding of and competence in applying the basic theories, techniques and methodologies in their field (e.g. Psychology, Human Factors, or Industrial Engineering). Student trainees are given assignments in accordance with their current skills and abilities, facility to learn (techniques, software, etc.), and as knowledge regarding research background and issues increases. Essential skills include problem solving, the ability to work independently and in teams, project management, strong written and oral communication. We are looking for students that are self-motivated, self-disciplined, and able to quickly learn new concepts and skills.

Preferred criteria include junior standing or higher with at least a 3.4 GPA. Applicants should also have completed their introductory coursework. A student not meeting these preferred criteria may still be considered if the applicant is strong overall.

The immediate supervisor or a senior staff member assigns work with specific instructions defining objectives, priorities, deadlines and evaluation criteria for each assignment. The incumbent works collaboratively with other psychologists, engineers and/or subject matter specialists, and carries out assignments through the use of instructions, policies, and previous training or accepted engineering practices. The supervisor or a senior staff member is readily available for advice and assistance as necessary. Completed work is reviewed for accuracy and adherence to standard practices by the project leader or supervisor.

Qualification Requirements: Candidates for this position must be a student who has been accepted for enrollment, or who is enrolled, as a degree seeking student in an accredited 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school majoring in an area related to this position (i.e. business, accounting, economics, etc.). The successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
